Partner Spotlight – Rush University System for Health
Another organization on the front lines of public and community health is Rush University System for Health (RUSH). Evan James Consulting first partnered with RUSH, a consistently high-ranked academic medical center in Chicago, IL, in the fall of 2019 as part of the Equitable Futures project with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Evan James’ lasting partnership with RUSH began by developing a financial sustainability plan, strategic plan, and accompanying staffing plan for one of the institution’s many impactful programs, the Rush Education & Career Hub (REACH).
For more than 30 years now, REACH has established a pioneering Pre-K to career pipeline program that exposes students to STEM topics and health careers and offers a robust set of internship opportunities and career support for high school and college students. In this work, RUSH’s long-standing and evolving commitment to health equity became evident and is why Evan James has continued to support and collaborate with RUSH on a number of mission-critical projects.
In the past few years, Evan James has supported RUSH and its programs/subsidiaries by:
- Conducting federal funding research and developing a tool to support grant application processes for REACH, helping the program to secure a federal grant of $1.2M;
- Developing a business plan for REACH’s emerging earned revenue strategy;
- Engaging stakeholders across the medical center, university, and community partners to develop RUSH’s first system-wide health equity strategic plan and logic model; and
- Facilitating a strategic planning process for RUSH’s Office of Community Health Equity and Engagement, which oversees strategic initiatives that improve the quality of life and dismantle barriers to good health within RUSH’s diverse neighboring communities.

Combined, these efforts help to accelerate RUSH’s work to train and develop a stronger and more diverse pipeline of health care professionals, as well as close the life expectancy gap between neighborhoods in Chicago.
Now, Evan James is working with the RUSH Institute for Health Equity—RUSH’s centralized catalyst linking and expanding the many health equity initiatives across the RUSH system—on a financial sustainability plan of its own.
Each time Evan James has worked with RUSH on a project, we come away with a deeper appreciation of its commitment to true health equity—not just in health care, but in the overall quality of life for everyone. RUSH’s vision and persistence is leaving an impact well beyond Chicago and it is raising the bar for health institutions worldwide. We are incredibly grateful to work with an organization so committed to achieving its extremely worthy objectives.
